Hi everybody! Can you help me with the translation of this wonderful Chinese institution's name into Bulgarian? Here it is: Office of Capital Spiritual Civilization Construction Commission Background info: this institution launches campaigns to teach people in Beijing the appropriate behavoiur needed during the Baijing Olympics. It also specifies a recommendable dresscode for Beijingers during the Olympics. Thanks in advance. Feel free to use this topic for any kinds of questions, related to translation |

Maybe something like this: Офис на столичната комисия по изграждане на дух (олимпийски) и цивилизованост (в смисъл на добри маниери и т.н., не откриване на топла вода и колело |

Yes, it should be something like this. It's one of the most ridiculous names of an institution I have ever encountered. But that's not that weird in a "People's Republic". |

Believe me, it's institutions like these which help in preventing narrow-sighted foreigners from going "Eww, that's gross!" during their stay in Beijing and other parts of China for the Olympic Games. Most westerners would be disturbed by images of dog meat hanging in front of restaurants which serve it, or deep-fried black scorpions and silk larvae on a stick being sold on the streets like the way we have sunflower seeds sold on ours. China is not what you think it is. |

OK, I guess they have stopped selling dog meat, fried scorpions and silk larvae during the Olympics, but that doesn't mean they're not going to start selling them after the games. I mean - I don't mind them selling weird food but why do they have to hide it from the foreigners? After all it's part of their culture and by far not the worst part. I think European tourists would be charmed by the genuine exotic atmosphere of China rather than disturbed by the unusual items on the stalls. |

Oh yes, guess what happens when Miss Bardo goes there and sees the dogs' meat. Or someone like her. |

The weird food was just an example of the areas the aforementioned institution will regulate during the Olympics. They hide it from the foreigners because a big part is disturbed by it, and because they don't want people like Miss Bardo, which are a pain in the a$$, rambling about how dogs shouldn't be killed for food. They want to seem more civilized, which is stupid IMHO because, as you said, they are changing, albeit temporarily, their culture and traditions, and they want to spare themselves the trouble of having to deal with imbecile activists... of course they'll start selling it again once the Olympics are over, and of course I'll try some when I get there.

This year's Olympic Games are a chance for the people of China, because nobody will want to back-pedal. |

Превод по шопски: "Ай да ни са излагаме бре, оставете кучетата." По книжовен: "Столичен Комитет за Тълкуване и Разясняване на Олимпийския Дух и Традиции" It should look like that in my opinion. The ordinary people in China have just as much knowledge and understanding for our, European traditions, as we have for thiers. When their army marches upon our lands, it'll be very kind of them to open such offices here, I've always found their culture quite amazing. |

Don't worry, that day will never come. First, China's policy is that of a "peaceful rise" and second, Sino-Bulgarian relations are very, very good. A few days ago when we had to apply for our residence permits here, everybody had to pay a fee, which was quite high - 1000 yuan (a bit over 100 euro). Everybody, except us, the Bulgarians. |
