здравейте!

I am an austrian student planning to study at SU for one year via the ERASMUS mobility programme. Right now I am writing my application form where I need to specify which lectures I plan to take part of. The problem is, that I don't understand how the amount of time they take are specified in the curriculum (public relations). I am used to classify lectures by how many hours per week they take, and 45 hours for "Theory of Journalism and Media" seem a bit much to me :) even if I assume that this is the total amount for the whole semester (lectures that take 2 hours a week are of a total around 30 hours per semester here at Vienna University).
So my main question is: can anybody tell me how to translate these figures to something I understand? ECTS would be ok, too. And by the way, is the bulgarian academic hour also just 45 minutes or a real hour?
Another question that bothers me is if I need to register for specific classes (seminars for example), and if so, how can I do this? Via internet? Are there usually problems getting into specific classes (overcrowded, etc.)?
The last thing I would like to know for now: are there also some lessons held in english/french/german/spanish? Just in case the cultural and linguistic shock hits me too hard during the first months... :)

Thank you in advance for your help,
Matthias

Hello Matthias,
Please, copy and post here the application and questions you have and I wiil try to help you! Sorry but I cannot understand what you mean exactly !
Academic hours are 45 minutes in SU. Lectures that take 2 hours a week are a total around 30 hours per semester here at SU too!
I am afraid that you cannot do anything about specific classes through Internet. You will be able to do this here!
About lessons in English, German etc. I dont know but you can check it up.

Hi Stone!

Thanks for your help! The curriculum for the BA-programme of public relations (downloaded from the SU homepage) says for example (for the first semester):
Код:
Дисциплина                             Хорариум       Л/У
Теория на журналистиката и медиите      45            30/15
Български език за чужденци              120           0/120

How much is this in hours per week or in ECTS?
There is no application form I have to fill, I need to describe why I want to go to SU and which lectures I plan to assist, which my department has to accept. The total amount I am obligated to do is at least 12 hours per week if I stay for 10 months (and that is my intention). I don't want to apply for too many lectures right now, because once my department accepts them, I am obligated to do them. When I am at SU I can always do more if I want. So to keep as much freedom as possible I would like to apply only for the minimum amount needed.
By the way, if someone can recomment me some really good lectures I would appreciate it very much :)

Благодаря много
Matthias

45 are total hours for that discipline for a semester: 30 Л (Л means lectures| - you will have 2 hours lectures per week : 15 У (У means seminars) - 1 hour for seminars per week. 120 hours Bulgarian language for foreigners means that you will have 8 hours Bulgarian every day! So far as I know the first semester you will have only Bulgarian language and then within the second semester - the rest disciplines! That is the practice usually but I am not sure how is it according to Erasmus programme. Can`t you ask somebody who is responsible for that programme - coordinator or someone else?
Unfortunately I cannot recommend you any interesting and useful lectures because I study social work but when you come here you will orientate!
I hope that answer is useful for you! If you have other questions - just ask

By the way - Why do you want to study in SU? That`s a good question taken from your letter of intent
Do you know any Bulgarian?

Thank you very much! That is the info I needed :) the rest is no problem.

Why do I want to study at SU? First of all, I wanted to learn a slavic language. As this is acheived best in the country itself, I started looking around what possibilities I had. I decided to take part of the ERASMUS programme as this is the one with the least burocratical expense. As the only place my department offers in a slavic country is at SU, I decided to go there (and after I collected more informations about Bulgaria, I am sure I made the right choice).
I started to learn bulgarian this semester, so I know a little of it (at least I can read cyrillic :)), but will continue so I will be able to assist in lectures held in bulgarian.
Writing bulgarian with the computer still is rather hard for me, because I am not yet used to the different keyboard layout.

Anyway, thanks again for your help!

I am almost sure that i will like it :) The other things I am interested in are probably best discovered when I'm there myself... thinking of nightlife, meeting people, getting around etc.
Oh, but if you know a good resource for finding accomodation, I would appreciate it very much. According to the reports of other students (they were at the New Bulgarian University) the officials are not of too much help in finding some place to live.
