Blog: The pride of Bulgaria
A Bulgarian fan posting on our message board as Predator-S explains why Berbatov joining United is the biggest thing in his country for more than a decade...
Berbo is my all-time favourite player. Why? Not just because he is a Bulgarian and a world class player which makes me feel proud, it's also because he has so many positive qualities.
In my opinion he is the best Bulgarian player ever. Sure, most of you might think that (former Barcelona forward) Hristo Stoichkov is better, but Berbo will win more honours with United. And for me, he has already surpassed Stoichkov in terms of his manners, politeness and overall behaviour. He's not the type of player to say, "Look at me, I play for the biggest club in the world." He is shy with a good soul and by joining United he's just following his dream.
Some people criticise him for being a moaner and being lazy, but I watched him a lot when he was playing for Spurs and I just thought he was getting frustrated when his team-mates couldn't figure out his moves. I doubt that'll be the case at United.
The transfer saga drained a lot of us, I can surely say that for myself. I followed it from last year and the past two months saw a lot of ups and downs for me. I was following the events all day on Monday but unfortunately had to travel for the last 3 hours of the window being open and couldn't get any info on what was going on. When I arrived at my destination and got my hands on the laptop I jumped sky high and couldn't believe it. It's a dream come true that it's finally over and in the best possible way.
Berbo's signing is the biggest thing in Bulgarian football since Stoichkov's Golden Ball and our fourth place at the 1994 World Cup. It's Bulgaria's biggest transfer ever and I doubt it'll be reached anytime soon. The media in Bulgaria went crazy - it was the top sport story everywhere. I couldn't sleep with all the excitement - I was exhausted but happy.
And Berbo is also clearly very happy. I watched his press conference in Bulgaria and he said the nicest things about United, that he was surprised by the treatment he got from Sir Alex and the whole club. He said that he doesn't want any more media attention (although that's impossible) and just to concentrate on his job at United, which he regards as the strongest club in the world.
I can't wait for his debut and to see the miracles he will create in a red shirt alongside Rooney, Ronaldo & Tevez.
